]]>We took a 4 seater (incl pilot) plane from Masai Mara to Mfangano Island (Lake Victoria) and back (4 days later). The plane flew at 7,500 feet above sea level, so less than 1,000 feet above the land.
The views of the Mara Escarpment were fantastic. The landscape changed from Masai 'Bomas' to remote homesteads and farms to surprisingly large industrial towns, before Lake Victoria opened up before us.
The pilot flew over the landing strip to frighten off any stray animals and dogs before going in to land.
A short walk to a landing stage found our speedboat waiting to take us round the island (there are no roads on Mfangano) to our holiday camp with its 6 exclusive houses.

]]>Masai Market, held every Friday in The Village Market, just outside Nairobi. Prices quoted are not to be taken seriously - bargain hard with these seasoned veterans of retailing!
Many of the traders are not Masai, but came from various tribes, Wakamba, Kikuyu, Leo etc; We even found a Jamacain!

]]>The Baby Elephant Orphanage, within the confines of Nairobi National Park. Run by Daphne Sheldrick and her daughter, it has become more commercialised over the years.
Orpaned elephants are well looked after by the staff and eventually returned to the wild.
The baby elephants are orphaned mostly at the hands of poachers; still rife in east Africa. After a period of time at Daphne Sheldrick's orphanage, they invariably spend time as 'teenagers' in a small park in Tsavo, before joining herds throughout Kenya.
